Vision Academy of Advanced Natural Talent
DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHOOL
K12 International Academy is a private, diploma-granting school with a unique student body representing students from almost every state in the U.S. and over eighty countries around the globe. Currently, we have approximately 200 full time students enrolled in the Class of 2013.
K¹² International Academy is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools, and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). Additionally, K¹² International Academy is recognized as a diploma-granting institution by the Virginia Council for Private Education as authorized by the Virginia State Board of Education.
As an online education provider, K12 International Academy has established a strong mission statement for our students. Our success is attributed to our highly dedicated, certified teachers who deliver a high-quality curriculum in an environment that uses online lessons along with text books and lab materials shipped to the students. Throughout every lesson, unit, and course, our teachers remain constantly involved to monitor progress, ensure mastery, and develop specific intervention plans if a student is in need of additional support.
Courses are structured to be delivered over ninety-day terms to ensure a quality education and a synchronous design, requiring a high degree of student–teacher interaction. Most of our students take a college preparatory curriculum over a four-year period.
Each student also has the support of an Academic Coach and College Counselor to ensure personal and academic success. A wide range of clubs and activities are available to provide our students with a rich and enjoyable high school experience.
High school students can choose from an extensive catalog of more than 100 courses to suit their interests and goals. English, math, science, and history courses are offered in multiple versions; Core, College Prep, Honors, and AP®, to meet the needs of learners with diverse goals. Up to four levels of world languages are offered as well, depending on the particular language. Eligible seniors may enroll in our dual enrollment program with the University of Maryland University College. Additionally, many K¹² International Academy courses can be used for NCAA athletic eligibility.
Combining K12’s award-winning curriculum with exceptional teachers, an amazing support team, and an individualized learning plan for every student, K12 International Academy puts in motion a complete program tailored to helping your child learn in a flexible and innovative way, at his or her own pace.
An individual learning plan for your child and a straight forward way to stay on course makes K12 International Academy stand apart from other private schools.
Finally, our K¹² specialists conduct extensive usability testing to make sure students and parents alike can easily navigate through the lessons and master the learning objectives. Online assessments are built right into the curriculum, with all course content designed to either meet or exceed U.S. national standards. And since the program is mastery-based, students won’t move on until they’ve demonstrated a full understanding of the material.
In the early years of education, young children love to explore, discover, and learn new things. Our academic program for grades K–5 taps into this natural inquisitiveness with courses that truly engage young minds and reinforce key concepts in meaningful ways. And since this age group typically needs more direct, focused guidance, we bring teachers and parents together in close collaboration to ensure each student’s success.
For each grade in Lower School, the K¹² online curriculum includes courses in the four core subjects—language arts, math, science, and social studies. Children also have access to music and art courses at each grade level, plus world language options beginning in third grade.
Every course is flexibly paced, allowing students to move at the speed that best suits their needs. Those who are ready to move on to the next lesson or unit can do so, while those who need just a little more time may take it.
Nearly all courses are complemented by a wealth of hands-on teaching tools you’d find in a traditional classroom. Plus, our regular math and our reading remediation courses feature advanced “adaptive” technology that intelligently adjusts to your student’s skill and knowledge level, offering practice in topics where it’s needed most.
Examples of Hands-on Materials
- Language arts: Illustrated children’s stories and poems, flash cards, phonics guides, dry-erase boards
- Math+: Block sets, place-value mats, activity books, protractors, color tiles, home items
- Science: Thermometers, magnifying glasses, magnets, test tubes, seeds, scales, rock and mineral kits
- Social studies: inflatable globes, U.S. and world maps, textbooks
- Music: CDs, songbooks, recorders, tambourines, slide whistles

How Teachers, Parents, and Students Work Together
In Lower School, from day one, we assign your student a single “homeroom” teacher—a highly qualified professional with specific expertise in the younger grades. This online teacher oversees all facets of the instructional experience for every subject, while you, as the parent, work side-by-side with your child to facilitate his or her progress through the daily lessons.
Every online course provides you with suggested lesson plans for the week, which update automatically as your student completes them. You can vary these plans to accommodate your child’s pace or abilities; our online scheduling and management tools make it easy to move things around.
For instance, some students do better when they can concentrate on a particular subject for longer hours per day, but fewer days per week. Other parents use their children’s favorite subject as a reward, to give them a periodic break from tougher subjects. Or you may take a day off or modify the schedule to accommodate your child’s outside pursuits.
On average in Lower School, you can expect to spend 4 to 6 hours per day supporting your child’s education, which most parents believe is “just right.” But you’re never alone. Throughout the week, your teacher stays in close contact with you and your student, communicating regularly by e-mail, over the phone, and in one-to-one, real-time meetings that take place online. He or she remains constantly involved in your child’s learning—monitoring progress, ensuring mastery, and developing specific intervention plans if needed.
Each Middle School grade includes the four core subjects—language arts, math, science, and social studies—along with music, art, and five world language options. Each course continues to be flexibly paced, allowing students to move at the speed that best suits their needs, and nearly all K12 courses are complemented by hands-on materials. In Middle School, students are challenged to examine more in-depth topics, such as:
- English: Literary interpretation, analytical writing, and oral communication skills
- Math: Problem-solving skills in geometry, algebra, probability, and statistics
- Science: Earth, physical, and life science at standard or advanced levels
- Social studies: Interconnected surveys in American and world history, from prehistoric to modern times
- World languages: Competency-level language development in Spanish, French, German, Latin, or Chinese
- Music: Exploration of famous composers and their works
- Art: Studies of great works of art, and the artists and cultures behind them
As in Lower School, the parent/Learning Coach continues to work closely with his or her student to facilitate progress through the daily lessons, and each online course provides suggested lesson plans for the week, which the Learning Coach can easily adjust.
In grades 6–8, the parent’s role adjusts to approximately 2 to 4 hours per day, as students take on more independent learning. This helps ensure that students master more complex ideas—like algebra, literary analysis, world history, and physical science—and feel prepared for Upper School. Teachers help students with challenging topics by, for instance, offering live online tutoring sessions.
K12 International Academy has a singular focus: to help your child reach his or her true, personal potential.
Combining K12’s award-winning curriculum and methodology with passionate educators, a socially active learning community, and an Individualized Learning Plan for every student, we put into motion a 360-degree solution tailored to your child’s specific needs. Our emphasis on the individual is so robust, we’ve even earned the nickname “iCademy.”
As a parent, you participate as an active partner with teachers and your child—while we provide support, advice, and access to an extensive parent network to ensure you’re never alone.
Whether you have a child craving greater challenge or one struggling to keep up, K12 International Academy surrounds students with the resources they need to succeed in school, in college, in a career, and in life.
Recognized as the gold standard in K–12 online education, the award-winning K¹² curriculum is created by some of the finest minds in education, including teachers, reading specialists, biologists, mathematicians, and artists. Working with exceptional designers and writers, these experts make learning come alive by combining decades of research from cognitive scientists about how the brain learns with rich, interactive content.
This patented methodology for online learning incorporates state-of-the-art multimedia—everything from engaging audio and video, colorful illustrations and animations, and insightful charts and graphs to dynamic activities, games, and demonstrations.
The K¹² curriculum team designs and develops each course for online delivery from the outset, thoroughly scoping out the learning objectives for each course and mapping out a strategy for how best to accomplish them. This is unlike many other online curriculum providers, who just scan a textbook and call it an online course.
Next, the curriculum team carefully crafts each course word by word, screen by screen, and lesson by lesson. To address the widest variety of learning styles, plenty of offline resources are integrated with the online lessons—including textbooks, CDs, videos, and hands-on materials like science equipment and art supplies.

The system also helps everyone in the family stay connected to all of the exciting and important things happening at K¹² International Academy.
It’s a lot like going to school, though without the long bus rides and crowded hallways!
Full-time enrollment is not our school’s only option. If you’re looking to supplement your child’s traditional brick-and-mortar education or add to your homeschool program, you can enroll your student in individual courses. There are many reasons students take a single online course through K¹² International Academy. They can:
- Achieve a competitive advantage for college applications with our AP and Honors courses
- Try a new world language or take languages courses not available at their local school
- Retake courses to catch up with peers, build self-esteem, and graduate on time
- Resolve scheduling conflicts in their daily school schedule
- Get a jump start on a career with one or more of our compelling electives
- Fill a “void” if art, music, or other vital subjects aren’t offered locally
Whether you enroll in several individual courses or just one, your student is considered a part-time student at VAANT, so you’ll still get all the great online tools and resources. Upon finishing a course, part-time students receive a certificate of completion for the purpose of obtaining credit from their full-time school or district.
